This site was created to encourage and inform single parents who are homeschooling or want to homeschool.

Finally! A site geared specifically towards single parents that want to homeschool. I was beginning to think that there weren’t any resources available for those of us that are single parents thinking about the home school way of life.

What I really like about the site is that it’s from someone that has done the whole single parent homeschooling thing. Since starting the site she’s remarried but she’s still been in the shoes of a single parent homeschooler so she knows what it’s like. She knows how single parents have to ‘think outside the box’ when it comes to teaching their child(ren) at home.

One thing I didn’t like about the site was that it has a lot of South Carolina resources available. Granted, she’s from there so it makes sense she would provide those resources. It just didn’t do me a lot of good to have homeschooling resources for a state I don’t live in. But, overall I was pleased with the site and the information available.

The Single Parent Homeschoolers site provides information about:

  • single parent homeschooler issues
  • encouragement and laughs
  • resources and references

Who ever knew there could be so much information available for homeschooling? I can’t believe how overwhelming the whole homeschool concept is.

I don’t know how someone goes from the idea to do it, to researching to actually doing it. I just keep thinking man, it’s a good idea I’m not wanting to do this full-time!

However, with all that being said I have found some awesome homeschooling information along the way. So I do feel like my research hasn’t been a complete waste. And hopefully something I share will be a help to someone out there!

This week I came across a site called Homeschooling Ideas. I did a Google search for ‘homeschooling for beginners’ and they were one of the first sites listed. There was one whole page devoted to ‘newbie’ things. The author shared that when they first started homeschooling they were exactly where I’m at right now – feeling clueless. So, they put together some advice (with links to articles, etc) that they wish they had been given back in the beginning!

Just a few of the things they touch base on:

  • Don’t rush out and spend a lot of money
  • Don’t let anyone tell you how to homeschool
  • Think of it as educating yourself as much as educating your child

I found the information pretty helpful. I’m still feeling pretty overwhelmed and not sure where to start. Thankfully I’m not on a time line or deadline of any sort and am only looking for ways to help supplement my son’s public school education in subjects he struggles in!

I’d like to say that homeschooling things were making more sense and I wasn’t feeling so overwhelmed. Unfortunately that’s not the case. If I’m this overwhelmed just doing research on ways I can homeschool part-time as a supplement to my son’s public school education,  I can’t imagine how overwhelming it would be if I were looking to do this full-time!

In my research this week I came across a site that provides thousands of  reviews in different categories of curriculum. They have 21 categories (math, religion, science, etc) and 73 different subcategories (Religion: bible courses and so on; Math: k-8 math and so on, etc)!

The reviews are all done by homeschooling families with honest opinions about the curriculum. There is a lot of different curriculum out there! For instance one of the areas I want to work with my son in is math. So I checked out their k-8 math category and there was a long page full of reviews on different curriculum to read reviews on!

The way they have the reviews set up (at least under the k-8 math section) made it really simple to tell if the review would be something that would pertain to me or not. There is a section that shows what grades the math curriculum was used for so if a review is done by someone that used it for 2nd grade math then I know it wouldn’t pertain to me.

I’ve bookmarked this site and plan on spending a lot more time reading through the reviews! It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re looking to know something about a specific curriculum.

This week I’m back to share another site I came across in my homeschooling research. The website was a bit ‘busy’ and overwhelming for me but once I weeded my way through things I did find some very useful information.

If you’re new to homeschooling, Anne (the owner of the website) has a pretty informative article beginning to homeschool where she provides several different resources such as:

  • Homeschooling Guide
  • Deschooling
  • Gaining Confidence
  • Help Getting Started Homeschooling
  • and more

I didn’t even have time to take a look around the rest of her site because that first article (link above) was so informative and had so many resources to check out. I thought the homeschooling guide was going to be an actual PDF printable guide but it wasn’t. It was just another article on her site but the information was good. I read the article through a couple different times and I’m starting to finally feel like I have a better idea of what homeschooling entails. It’s so much more than ‘teaching your child at home’.

If you’re going to homeschool it’s important to get your kids involved in outside activities with other homeschooled children, etc. One of the things that a child learns in public school is how to interact socially so as a homeschool parent it’s going to be your responsibility to make sure you provide many different forms of activities where you child can be social.

As stated above, the website was a bit too ‘busy’ and overwhelming for me but the information Anne provides is really informative, easy to understand and newbie friendly. So, it’s definitely worth checking out. There is a lot of information on her site!
